SC/GA Beaches

So we haven't taken a beach vacation since well before the kids were born. All my experience is on the South New Jersey beaches.

We've pretty much zeroed in on Tybee Island GA and are looking for any input on anywhere a similar distance from home. Myrtle seems like a beach version of Gatlinburg so we have just about eliminated that one. Camping would be nice but we're open to hotel / condo options.

OK so teach this former yankee about the southern Atlantic beaches....

We do not like Myrtle Beach, too crowded and commercial. We like Tybee and have been there 4 or 5 times. Last year we tried Jekyll Island and we like it better than Tybee. At either place, you will have to ride a bike or drive to the beach since the campgrounds are not on the beach. At Tybee you have to pay to park if you drive to the beach or pier. Jekyll does not charge for parking. We were at Jekyll the middle of June last year and it was not crowded at all. We actually never went off the island the whole week. We were told we would have to go off the island to find a good restaurant, but, the one we ate at on the beach was very good and there were more to choose from. There is a water park on Jekyll and we spent one day there with the kids and they loved it. Basically, we love both places but prefer Jekyll over Tybee now. We plan on being at Jekyll this year from June 21-30. At Jekyll, you can get the Wild Georgia Shrimp and they have a different taste. Shrimp and Grits is very good.
