Ham Radio?

Ham Radio?
Do we have any ham radio operators among our camping group? I have always been a little interested in amateur radio and just recently found a great deal on a little handheld radio. I took the license test a couple of weeks ago and passed. Mostly just been listening.. For now.
Re: Ham Radio?
I am licensed and mainly use a cheap China HT, it has worked surprisingly well. In the couple years I have had the license I think I have only transmitted a time or two, I mainly just listen and learn.

I used to hang out with a buddy that was really into ham radio. I would help him make and hang antennas. He had cards from all over the world. They had a special name Q S L or something like that
Re: Ham Radio?
Helmsey.. I have a cheap HT too.. It's a Baofeng UVR5A. I have talked a few times.. It also has the family radio service and general mobile channels which might be good for campers. No license is required for FRS. Not sure where you are.. But I've been listening, mostly, to repeater in Campbell county.. 147.360. My call is KK4YGF.
Re: Ham Radio?
That's the same radio I have. I got it cause it would be a cheap way to see if I enjoyed it or not. I don't have any of the FRS stuff programmed into it, I guess I need to look into that. Where did you find the info on that? I'd like to eventually have a rig in the truck but just don't want to invest the $$ to do that. I did
I think that is the repeater I listen to on Sunday nights to see whats going on, usually a good group talking then.
I am KK4PFX.
Man, I need to dig that radio back out. When I traded trucks it got put away in the box used to clean the old one out. Haven't had it out in some time now.

Re: Ham Radio?
A friend at work programmed mine with his laptop PC and a special cable.. Took about 5 mins. I have the local police radio (where I work).. Fire and ems.. Several repeaters.. Etc etc.
Re: Ham Radio?
I have the software and cable to program, just don't have the frequencies. You should ask your friend if he would provide a list of them you could share
I have about a dozen or so of the local repeaters, more than enough to keep my ears busy.
